Lifelong Wellness for Women

Maya abdominal therapy

The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy ® offer a powerful approach to healing that can help transform your health for the long term. ATMAT® can benefit both women and men as they seek to relieve pain and dysfunction. It is best known for its capacity to relieve digestive and reproductive concerns, as well as to support emotional healing after trauma, stress, or abuse.

What Is Maya Abdominal Therapy?

Maya Abdominal Therapy is a non-invasive massage technique designed to release restrictions in the abdomen and hips. It’s most commonly used to help:

  • Correct the position of the uterus and abdominal organs
  • Ease chronic digestive conditions
  • Support overall reproductive health for women and men
  • Release scar tissue and adhesions from surgery
  • Relieve chronic back, hip, and groin pain

The primary goal of Maya Abdominal Therapy is to improve the flow of blood, lymph, nerve impulses, and chi throughout the vital structures and muscles of the abdomen and pelvis. The body can then heal itself most effectively, and a variety of symptoms throughout the body may be relieved.

Arvigo Techniques Maya Abdominal Therapy

History of The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy ®

Dr. Rosita Arvigo has over thirty years of training in massage, spiritual healing, herbology, and naprapathy (a system of care that uses the manipulation of soft tissues and joints to promote healing).

Her training includes apprenticeships in Belize with Don Elijio Panti, a renowned Mayan healer; and Hortence Robinson, a traditional midwife and herbalist. Today, The Arvigo Institute teaches a variety of courses to practitioners the world over, ensuring that the knowledge and wisdom of her Mayan mentors will continue to touch lives for generations to come.

Don Elijio Panti believed that a woman’s uterus is her center: if her uterus is out of balance, so is she. For this reason, the Arvigo ® work is well-known for relieving issues related to fertility, menopause, pelvic pain, uterine prolapse, and dysfunctional cycles.

However, the receiver need not have a uterus to benefit from this approach to abdominal and whole-body health. It is especially beneficial for women after a hysterectomy, as well as for men experiencing digestive or reproductive concerns.

Preparing For ATMAT®

ATMAT ® addresses physical, emotional, and lifestyle concerns as part of your integrated treatment. It is an external therapeutic technique, and you will remain appropriately draped at all times. Clients who continue the self-massage protocol, along with recommended complementary care, enjoy the greatest improvements in their overall health.

Before scheduling your initial session, contact deleen@lifelongbodywork.com to discuss your needs and goals. Once you decide to move forward, you’ll receive an intake form via email. This form must be filled out completely and submitted to your practitioner for review prior to scheduling your initial session.

Your initial session (2 - 2.5 hours) includes:

  • A detailed discussion of your health history and current symptoms
  • Instruction in self-care massage to continue your care at home
  • Abdominal massage to promote alignment of organs and release muscle tension
  • Bodywork around the back, sacrum, and tailbone to help align the hips and spine
  • Recommendations for complementary care, such as:
    • Castor oil packs
    • Faja - a wrap to support the organs
    • Herbal remedies
    • Bajos - vaginal steam baths
    • Nutrition and lifestyle changes

Followup sessions are 1 hour.

The effects of Maya Abdominal Therapy are cumulative. As the body unwinds, releases, and rebalances, each session is a little bit different than the last. For this reason, most people will benefit from planning an initial treatment regimen of 3-6 months to support these changes. However, the initial session alone is still beneficial, especially when self-care massage then becomes a regular part of your lifestyle.

You may have heard the saying, “Your issues are in your tissues”. This means that the body holds its own memories of experiences throughout your life, which are distinct from the memories of your logical brain. The belly and hips especially tend to be emotionally charged areas, and what you experience or think about during your session may surprise you. Please know that it is common to have an emotional release during or after your session. It is wise to be aware of support systems or practitioners you can turn to for help processing what comes up.
